Valor

Design document for NRR Valor System

Info

To make melee combat more dynamic and rewarding, we've implemented a Valor system. This system boosts your character's speed, attack damage and more after securing kills, perfectly complementing the game's fast-paced action. It gives players an extra strategic layer when using melee weapons, making them more effective and enjoyable. For instance, increased movement speed allows you to close distances quicker, while boosted attack damage helps you clear out enemies faster.

Currently, the valor system is designed specifically for the melee weapons however, they can be re-worked to be used on normal weapons if needed.

How to use the system

To activate the Valor system, the player must be using a melee weapon, or certain projectile weapons. When the player takes down an enemy, the weapon used gains a Valor point, which gradually increases over a few seconds. The player will see this progression on their weapon's UI.

As the player's Valor level goes up, they will receive increasingly powerful boosts. Currently, Valor enhances:

  • Player Speed

  • Weapon Animation Speed

  • Attack Speed

  • Damage

As the Valor increases the weapon gains power, they'll notice a visual transformation in its appearance. This is accompanied by a particle effect and a sound effect that visually and audibly highlight the boost around the player. The player can continue to increase their Valor until it reaches its maximum level.

Once Valor increases, a cooldown timer starts, the time varying by weapon. If you don't get another kill before this timer runs out, your Valor level will begin to decrease. Essentially, it's a "kill or lose your levels" system, pushing you to keep the momentum going.

If you fail to get a kill before the cooldown ends, you'll see a visual warning that your Valor is about to drop. You still have a much shorter window to get a kill and prevent the reduction, but if you miss this last chance, your Valor level will indeed go down. When the player's Valor level starts to drop, they'll see a reverse transformation in their weapon's appearance, accompanied by a distinct sound effect and particle effect. These cues visualise that the player's power is decreasing.

Upgrades

Most standard weapons feature eight upgrades, with half of those being projectile-based. Since projectile upgrades aren't applicable to melee weapons, we've instead focused on upgrading their Valor system, as it serves as their secondary progression system.

Upgrading Valor functions similarly to projectile upgrades. However, when the player enters the shop to enhance Valor, the relevant statistics are stored separately from projectile upgrade info. Additionally, the shop interface will visually adapt, replacing bullet-related tabs with options specific to Valor upgrades.

In game Sword Valor upgrades

These Valor upgrades will vary depending on the specific weapon the player is using. However, they'll typically enhance all of the boosts the player receives that are linked to that particular weapon.
